I have a Ph.D. in English, am a native speaker of English and Spanish, am fluent in German, and am teaching myself Korean. In addition, I have had a Korean girlfriend for over 12 years, and have been around Koreans for dozens of years. I also have fully-reviewed (gone through) every major Korean vocabulary book from Talk to Me in Korean, Darakwon, Tuttle, Routledge, U of Hawaii Press, Language Books, McMillan Publishing, Hollym, etc. Without question, the Oxford Picture Dictionary English-Korean is a strong 5-star book. I am shocked that someone even contemplated giving this book anything less than a 5 or 4.First, this picture dictionary, though designed for Korean learners of English (NOT for native English speakers learning Korean) has more color photos and perhaps more subject-area categories than most Korean vocabulary picture dictionaries on the market. Though designed for learners of English, since it is a bilingual book, one can (and should) use this book to learn Korean, since the Hanguel script is printed in nicely large letters. Also, it's at least as good as the very best Korean picture dictionaries designed for English speakers learning Korean: I am thinking of the two fabulous Korean vocabulary picture dictionaries published by Darakwon, one fabulous Korean picture dictionary published by DK Publishing, another fabulous book by Tuttle, and yet another fabulous Korean photo dictionary by Language Books. What distinguishes this English-Korean picture dictionary by Oxford is that it has vocabulary for several very useful thematic categories that are either not found in other picture dictionaries (e.g. civil services offices one might also visit in Korea to conduct transactions, e.g. a form one has to fill out with one's name, address, etc.) or do not contain as many words per section. Though the book is technically designed for Koreans who wish to learn English, it is perfect for English speakers who wish to learn Korean. There are literally thousands of color photos and easy-to-read Korean Hanguel font. The thematic vocabulary sections are designed as though one were looking inside a room with all of the objects,, people, animals, tools, etc. etc. etc. numbered: and next to those numbers are the English and Korean names for each specific type of object, tool, animal, section in a form, type of doctor, type of food, section of an airport or post office, etc. etc. etc.The only two drawbacks for a Korean learner, which would allow me to accept a "4" rating from a reviewer who owns Darakwon's, Tuttle's, and Language Books' Korean vocabulary-focused books (which have MP3 files) is that, first, this Oxford Picture Dictionary: English-Korean does not have MP3 files for learning how to pronounce Korean. However, since the book is designed for Koreans to learn English, and not for English speakers to learn Korean, a person learning Korean should not fault the book for lacking audio files for the Korean translations of English words. Secondly, it would have been great if Oxford added the Revised-Romanization English romanization of Korean script developed in 2000 by The National Institute [Academy] of the Korean Language and placed that modern romanization beside the Hanguel (Korean language script) so that a learner of Korean could have a helpful aid in pronouncing the Korean words. But again, this is only if Oxford reconceives this wonderful dictionary as a tool for English speakers to learn Korean, and NOT simply as a dictionary for Koreans to learn English. I think Oxford SHOULD make these two changes in a third edition of the Oxford Picture Dictionary, and they should rename the third edition to reflect that the book can be used by both English speakers learning Korean, and Korean speakers learning English: for example, call something like Oxford's Korean-English/English-Korean Vocabulary Learning Visual Dictionary.
